Abstract Form with a Shared Void: Step-by-Step Tutorial

A second variation on interlocking negative space, designed as a companion piece to “Abstract Form with an Interlocking Bridge” — same language, different composition. The closing piece of the advanced series, where the void is no longer a device but the central subject.

This piece can be carved in high-density rigid polyurethane foam (to practice the form without fear of mistakes) or directly in wood, for the final piece. Recommended wood: mahogany or lignum vitae — the same family as “Abstract Form with an Interlocking Bridge,” for the same need for tight grain at the point of connection.

Step by step

Initial block

Start with a rectangular block of wood or high-density foam. Draw the front outline of the abstract form with a shared void on all four faces of the block, and mark a center line on each.

Remove the excess material following the outline you drew. The piece is still flat, like a cut-out silhouette, but you can already recognize the overall shape.
