Types of Wood Carving

"Wood carving" isn't one thing: it's a family of crafts that share a tool but chase very different results. Knowing the types of wood carving helps you understand what you see online and, above all, choose where to start. Here are the main ones, by hand (no machines).

Relief carving

Worked on a flat panel, with the figure standing out from the background, like a carved picture. It's the kindest place to start because you control depth. If you like, here's the deep dive: what is relief carving?

In-the-round (free-standing sculpture)

The piece is carved on every side and stands on its own in space: an ovoid, a figure, an animal. It demands thinking the volume in 360°. This is sculpture proper — and the one I love most.

Chip carving

With a special knife you remove small triangular "chips" to create geometric patterns on a flat surface. Very decorative, almost meditative, with very few tools.

Whittling

The most nomadic carving: just a knife and a piece of wood to make small figures. No bench, no gouges. It's how many people start.

Utilitarian carving (spoons and "treen")

Hand-carved objects for use: spoons, bowls, handles. It joins the beautiful and the useful; the wooden spoon is almost a rite of passage.

What about power carving?

There's power carving (rotary tools, burrs), faster but less instructive at first. My advice: learn the gesture by hand first; the machine comes later, if you want it.

Which to start with? Relief: few tools, flat, and you paint it. The wave relief tutorial is ready, and when you want to leap into volume, the ovoid is waiting.

Start with relief

The kindest type of carving for beginners: the wave relief, step by step.
