There are several types of wood carving and they're all good — but some fit you better than others. Answer these 4 questions and I'll tell you where to start.

1. What appeals to you most?

2. What do you have?

3. What relaxes you most?

4. What do you want it for?

Answer all 4 questions to see your result.

Relief is your thing

You like telling something on a surface and watching it gain depth. Relief is the perfect entry: few tools, control over depth, and a finish that looks good from day one. Start right here.

Start with the wave relief

In-the-round carving is your thing

You want forms that stand on their own and turn in the hand: real sculpture. Your ideal first step is the ovoid in foam, where you learn to think volume in 360° without fighting the grain.

Start with the ovoid

Chip carving draws you in

You're about pattern, geometry and calm detail. We don't have a chip-carving tutorial yet, but the best starting point to loosen your hand and master the stop cut is relief — that technique is the foundation of everything.

Loosen up with relief

Whittling is your thing

Carving anywhere with little more than a knife: the nomadic spirit of carving. While we prepare whittling content, I'd start with relief to master the edge and the cutting direction safely.
